Hive minds.2 The Short Story

Laura and Gavin laid kissing on top of their blanket.  The moon and the stars lit up the night. It was a warm July fourth night in New Mexico.The sounds of fire works blasted off in the distance. They looked each other in the eye.paused for a moment to take it in.then kissed passionately while they caressed each other.

Gavin was 5'10 and stocky.his black skin almost camouflaged him in the night.The small camp fire they had going shined off of Laura's white skin. she touched Gavin's face caressing it as she looked into his dark brown eyes. having him with her now made Laura feel weak inside. she loved Gavin with all her heart. it had been four years since they met. the shade tree they laid under was the spot where they had their first kiss.

Laura loved how Gavin tried to find ways to be romantic. he had his faults but every time he looked into her eyes. Laura know he loved her with all his heart. Gavin was a manager at best buy and Laura taught at the local school. they did not have much but they made it work. that was another reason Laura loved him. Gavin could make the best of a bad situation. over the years they had their ups and downs but fought through it. 

Now Laura was ready for the next step she wanted to spend her life with Gavin. maybe have some kids in the next couple years. build a family and build their life together. she knew their must of been a special reason he brought her here tonight. over the past couple of weeks Gavin had been acting real funny. not in a cheating suspicious way but in a your planning something big type of way. Laura knew her man and knew when the wheels were turning in his head.

Gavin sat up and took Laura's hand into his. she sat up to met his eyes. Gavin looked into Laura's Beautiful green eyes and paused for a minute. he stood up and held his hand out for her to take it. Laura took his hand and Gavin guided her to the edge of the cliff that over looked their small town. 

"Laura you know I've loved you since the first day i saw you. he have broken up and gotten back together. we have laughed and we have cried together. through all that has happened over the last four years. their is no other woman. i would of rather go through it with. you

 make me happy and i love to wake up to you every morning for the rest of my life" Gavin said getting down on one knee.

Gavin pulled a small box out his pocket. Laura's eye lit up with joy she was at a lost of words. then suddenly something in the sky caught her eye. the excitement that was once on her face turned into fear. she thought it was just a meteor falling but then the size and speed of it was not right. a meteor would of broke up mostly in the atmosphere already.

"whats wrong" Gavin asked looking up

Laura was in such fear she could only point. some thing was falling from the sky and headed straight towards them, it was streaking fire from falling through the atmosphere. it looked like a space ship from the size of it. Gavin grabbed Laura and tucked the small box back in his pocket. they ran to the car half way to it the  thing crashed about a quarter mile away from them. Gavin threw Laura on the floor and hoped on top of her. just in time for the impact which burst out the windows of their car.

they rolled over knocking glass shards off of them. Gavin looked at Laura and checked her for any harm. she was shaken up but fine other wise.he stood up and put his hand out once more for her. Laura took it and stood to her feet. Gavin began to walk toward the wreck. Laura pulled him back with a look of fear in her eyes. the booms are fireworks lit up the sky and echoed above them. Gavin turned to Laura.

"we have to go see if anyone is hurt. that could be a trapped or injured pilot."
"that was not a normal ship dear. its something else. lets just go get help. if something is wrong with someone neither of us are doctors. what could we do?"
"we can do something dear. it never hurts to go check and then get help. lets just identify exactly what we need help with first."

Gavin continued to turn around and Laura followed him. they passed their wrecked ford focus. noticing some dents in the passenger side frame. Laura could only cover her mouth as she looked at her dented up car. they walked on toward the crash site and edged to the gaping hole in the earth now. the ship was about 20 feet down into the massive hole. the small craft was about 10 feet wide and 8 ft across. it looked to Gavin like a big shiny refrigerator that fell off a plane.

Gavin and Laura looked at each other without saying a word. Their eyes took on a greenish hue.  They began walking toward the town. Between the two of them not a word was uttered. They spoke telepathically.

A few miles up the road they saw their bar. "The watering hole" was the saloon for the older crowd in town. They had spent many nights here just drinking and laughing. It didn't have all those flashing lights and obnoxious DJ's. It was a simple bar, with four booths and a small dance floor. A few seats around the bar and a small jukebox. Which was filled with old and new pop & rock greatest hits.

Gavin and Laura went inside and headed straight to the bathroom. A few people who knew them waved or hollered their name. Neither of them looked their way or responded.  Laura closed the bathroom door behind them. She also cut off the lights.

Standing in the darkness their eyes lit up. Laura punched Gavin in the chest and slapped him in the face. He pushed her into the wall cracking the mirror. People outside of the bathroom began to look at it hearing the rumbling. Gavin finally asserted his dominance on Laura.they began to mate. Laura moaned loudly as Gavin plowed into her.The bartender Aaron came to the door.he turned the knob and realized it was locked. Aaron banged on the door hard.

"Hey this isn't a motel you two need to get out of there."

Neither of them responded or stopped. Aaron banged on the door and kicked it. Seeing that he was making a scene.he turned and went back to the bar angrily. Reaching under it Aaron grabbed the ring of keys. As he went back to the door Aaron stopped hearing complete silence. Gavin and Laura weren't making a sound, everyone in the bar was watching him.

As Aaron began to put the key into the hole. Laura began to scream in pain. Aaron quickly opened the door.he was taken back by what he saw. Gavin was on his knees in front of Laura. She was sweating with her legs wide open. As if she was preparing to give birth.

"What the fuck is going on here"

As Aaron finished his sentence. Laura let out one final scream. She gave a hard push, small black balls began falling out of Her vagina. Aaron stepped back in horror. The balls began to hatch. Small blue and green butterflies began coming out of them.

Aaron stepped back in horror as the butterflies flew up in a group. One landed on his hand and bit into him. He jumped back and tried to get it off his hand. The butterfly dug into his skin.Aaron watched on in horror, as the butterfly made its way up his arm and onto his neck. Aaron instantly calmed down. His eyes took on the greenish hue.

Around the bar the other patrons stated to freak out seeing the sight. Some tried to get out the bar. Others were being taken over by the butterflies. They scratched their skin and screamed. As the aliens made there way through their bodies. A few drunk guys began trying to shoot the butterflies out the sky.

A few of the converted began to subdue them. In order for their brethren to land and take over. Once the bar was fully converted they all looked at Gavin and Laura. Without saying a word they all understood the next phase. The converted followed Gavin and Laura out the bar.

Thirty of the town people walked in unison behind the two. They were headed toward the town. The night illuminated their greenish hue colored eyes. A local sheriff cat drive down the road and stopped a few feet in front of them. The deputy Carl got out and yelled.

"What's going on here"

Gavin walked up with that eye silence and a straight face. The deputy knowing him began to ask him what was wrong. The look in Gavin's eyes made the deputy back up and reach for his mace.

"Gavin you stop right there....I don't know what's going on....don't make me use this"

Gavin continued walking forward without saying a word. He put his hand in his shirt pocket. The deputy Todd him to stop and pulled out the mace. Gavin took a butterfly out his pocket. He held it gently as he stepped closer. Once he got to the hood of the car. Carl sprayed him with mace.

Gavin released the butterfly and screeched in pain. The group also let out a screech to match his. They felt the burn of the mace just as he did. Carl looked at the butterfly that was flying toward him. Ignoring it he kept his eyes on the screeching group. A cold chill started coming up his spine.

Carl jumped into his car and grabbed the radio.

"Sheriff I'm down county line road from the watering hole...I think I need backup.. I got something weird going on.... what the hell..."

The butterfly landed on his neck and began to bury inside him. Carl squirmed and hollered as the alien began trying to convert him. The dispatcher frantically tried to ask him what the problem was. Carl stood up and looked at Gavin. Without saying a word he fixed his clothes, and fell in line with everyone else.

The group continued on toward the town. They cut through the woods getting off the road. The town fair was only a few miles ahead of them. As they grew near to it. Gavin and Laura stopped halting the group. The group instantly began having a group orgy. Within minutes all the women in the group began birthing out more of the black balls. Slowly they began hatching.

As the butterflies rose up in the sky. The group proceeded toward the fair. They spread out and began covering the entrances. The butterflies swarmed into the fair. They began covering everyone the landed on. Quickly panic set into everyone at the fair. A fire broke out in the confusion and began to spread. Helium canisters exploded and sent flames everywhere.

As people tried to rush to their cars. The converted outside at the entrances restrained them.  People were trampled and the fair animals yelled in fear. Chaos broke out as the converted closed in on who remained. The People surrounded genes whatever they could to defend themselves. As the converted and butterflies inched closer. Their resistance was futile. they fought hard but eventually dead in the struggle or was converted.

As the fire consumed the fair the converted followed Gavin and Laura to the town. Suddenly they stopped in the middle of the woods. Gavin turned around and looked at a few of his brethren. They immediately nodded. He grabbed Laura's hand and they walked off into the woods.

Mira fought her thoughts as she headed to the skate park. All the thoughts of the converted swarmed through her head. She knew Gavin and Laura were headed to her. Mira hoped that all her friends were going to be there. The group chat she had been frantically watching. Said all the teens were going to meet their.

The Naru were who these invaders were. memories of their past and purpose flashed through her brain. Mira knew why they were here now and, knew if she did not stop them more would come. the Naru were a conquering race. they spread through out the galaxy assimilating all they came across into the hive.on a quest for all the knowledge in the galaxy's. the group that landed here was just a scouting pod. sent through space and finding earth as a prime target for life. once they had taken over the town they were going to signal the hive to their finding. Mira bobbed and weaved through the woods desperately trying to get to the skate park.

She found the sudden burst of knowledge overwhelming and disorientating. trying to focus ahead of her became very difficult. the hundreds of voices in her head were relentless. then she feared Gavin and Laura were on to her plans. they knew where Mira was and she knew where they were. only a few miles separated them.  it would not be long before they got to her and the rest of the teens. Mira tried her hardest to pick up her pace. Gavin and Laura calmly walked toward her without even a slight discomfort. Mira was almost drenched in her own sweat from the humidity.

Knowing her plan the Naru had already began devising their own counter plan. Mira knew they normal conquering strategy now. the would divide and multiply first. then shut of communication to the town. the main group of the converted would continue converting as many of the town folk as they could. while two sub groups would systematically begin preparing to contact the mother hive. one would close off all communication outgoing and within the town. the other would begin setting up a home nest to replenish the fleet.

The breeding group already picked the abandoned hosiery mill as their home hive. Mira could feel the emotions as they commenced mating. the pure unbridled  lust and passion the were giving her made it even harder to run. trying with all her might to block it out she pushed on to the skate park. which was only a half mile through the woods now. finally clearing the trees she could see a group of people congregating at the bowl. getting closer she heard them shouting and the panic in some of their voices. others just cried and held on to each other watching the rest.

Thomas her best friend ran seeing her in the distance ran over to her with Catlin. they expressed their worry about her. told her what they knew so far. Mira stopped them and told them what she knew. Thomas and Catlin looked at each other in disbelief. Mira could feel the awkwardness and hesitation from them. yet she did not have time to try and make them believe her. Gavin and Laura where not to far from them. they had to move and put a plan in action.

"Guys we do not have time for this. the Earth is in danger and if we do not move now we'll all be converted."

Mira ran to the group and began to shout. everyone quieted down and focused on her. she repeated what she told Thomas and Catlin. again she got the same response yet this time the cries of fear became louder.

"why should we believe you nerd. if what you say is true, how do we know you are not one of them? this could be a trap. to lure the rest of us in and convert us."
"listen guys I know this is hard to believe but two of them are heading toward us now. if we do not make a plan of action its going to be to late. fire is their weakness they cant handle the heat. if we can get to the hosiery and burn it down. we can slow down this invasion. how we are going to handle the ones that are converted already is another story. they know my every move i am connected to them some how but i am fighting it. i do not quite understand how yet but i know what i am saying and we can stop them. we have to work together and we have to work fast."
"how are we going to stop the whole town. they have already converted most of the people in town. its only us and the last we have heard. a bunch of the town folk are held up at city hold trying to hold them off. they have shut down all the cell towers and have already taken control of the police station. we are out gunned and out manned."
"it is hopeless we are all doomed" one girl shouted from the back and began to cry even louder
"shut up Suzy... I wish they had got you at the fair. it would of saved us one more weak link." another boy shouted from the mob.

The group began to argue among themselves. the shouts and insults drowned Mira's cry for peace and action out. finally a shot rang out and every one quieted down. Thomas stepped forward he grabbed Mira's hand and nodded to her. Thomas was always ready to take control of a situation. that was what Mira loved about him. He was always strong in the face of diversity. now more then ever Mira realized how much she had depended on him over all these years. the love in her heart grew ten fold. yet now was not the time for her to get all emotional and spill her love for him. a road they had been down one to many times over the years.

 she felt a wave of relief come over her. this whole ordeal was beginning to weigh heavy on Mira's mind body and even her spirituality. since getting bit at the fair Mira had been praying for god to give her strength.in her heart she believed that he was giving her the strength and will power to fight off the Naru. why the lord has chosen her was still a mystery. thinking about her mother, Mira could hear her saying the lord works in mysterious ways. now though more then ever Mira questioned what those ways were.

her mother was one of the converted and all the faith that she has bestowed into her was gone. now she was part of the hive. thinking about her mother Mira could feel her giving birth in the hosiery mill. the thought of baby Naru coming out of her mother made her weak to the stomach. Gavin and Laura's presence at the clearing before the skate park. snapped Mira back to reality she quickly regained her composure.

"guys you have to move. they are here already. you guys need to form a plan of attack. do not tell me cause then they will know. i will stay and try to hold them off so you guys can get a head start on them. their weakness is fire or high voltages. it will fry the Naru's connection from the brain if the host is over heater or shocked well enough. be careful though severing the connection from the host, can possibly kill the host. if their bond is strong enough with it. I hope that helps I wish i had more information on their weak points."

The group turned to look at where Mira was facing as she spoke. they all saw Gavin and Laura walking calmly across the field towards them. quickly Thomas took charge again and herded everyone out the park. where he was headed he was not sure not. all he knew was the skate park was not safe anymore. Mira began to walk towards Gavin and Laura. Thomas grabbed her hand and spun her around. before she could say anything or figure out the problem. Thomas kissed her passionately on the lips. Mira stood shocked he had taken the breath away from her. all these years of being friends she had waited for this moment. with her luck it would happen when the world was about to end she thought.

"I have always cared about you Mira, but i have never wanted to ruin what we had as friends. please take care of yourself. i will do my part to try and stop this. no matter what happens. at sunset make your way to the Pentecostal church. i will be there waiting for you"

Before Mira could respond Thomas gave her another kiss and a tight hug. she just nodded as he turned and tried to catch up with the group. Mira watched for a moment as he slowly disappeared into the woods. where he was headed she did not know and did not want to know. Losing her mother already was enough to lose Thomas or Catlin now would just be devastating. she could never face the apocalypse by herself. Mira just did not believe she had that kind of strength. it had already taken everything she could muster, to make it to the park.

Suddenly an arm grabbed her by the shoulder and spun her around. Gavin was standing behind her and Laura was right next to him. they both looked at her with their greenish hazed eyes. they said not a word but she understood all to well. Mira was coming with them and their was nothing she could about it. telepathically they spoke to here for a moment all the other voices seem to be drowned out. Mira felt as if it was just the three of them connected. their thoughts were her thoughts, and her thoughts were their thoughts.

They were taking her to the hosiery mill as a hostage. they knew she had warned the others and figured at some point in time she would come in handy. either they would use her to further their conquest of the town. or she would be their ambassador to this world. although they had acquired plenty of information about the earth. their were still many puzzling things about human nature. since Mira was one of the few unique individuals to resist their assimilation. she would be the perfect candidate to bridge the knowledge gap. her resistance would be only for a short period of time, soon she would realize it was pointless. the invasion would soon commence and the earth would be assimilated into the hive. one world one mind and one goal. to continue to spread through the galaxy's acquiring all the knowledge their was.

The main group of soldiers were already breaking down the fortress the town folks had set up at the town hall. it would only be a matter of time until they fully converted all of them. unlike the earthlings the Naru did not need. they received their rest from those in the hive. some Naru were just sleeping pods that gave the rest the energy they needed. all they did in the hive was sleep and receive nourishment's for their host. the people in the town hall would soon succumb to fatigue or lack of food. within the next few days the town would be fully converted and the mother hive would be on its way. they had done this thousands of time. every planet they encountered fell sooner rather than later.

Gavin had already sent orders to the new hatch-lings and some of the converted to find the mob of teens. it would not be long before they to were stopped in their plans of rebellion. Mira cringed at the thought of what the Naru were planning and how meticulous they were going about it. she said another prayer that Thomas would do what he always did and make a way out of no way. if anyone could save them it was him.
